How to Comment on a Text · Step 2

Building Paragraph Logic

Move from understanding the structure to building a clear and balanced paragraph step by step.

Step 2

Use the five parts to build a real paragraph

In Step 1, you learned the internal structure of a strong paragraph. In this step, you now use these five parts in a clear order and begin to shape a complete paragraph of your own.

What this trains

Strong paragraphs do not only contain the right parts. They also move forward in a clear logical sequence.

This step helps you understand how the five parts work together so that one paragraph feels connected, balanced and purposeful.

Writing becomes easier when each sentence has a clear job

Step 2 is about turning structure into actual writing.

You begin with one clear idea, support it with evidence, explain its meaning, make it concrete and then bring the paragraph to a clear conclusion.

Instead of writing everything at once, you build your paragraph step by step — until it feels balanced and complete.

The five parts of a strong paragraph

See the full paragraph in action

The five parts matter most when you see how they work together inside one complete paragraph.

A model paragraph

This example shows how one clear point can be developed step by step.

Topic Sentence: One important reason to regulate social media more strictly is the protection of young users. Evidence: Recent studies show that teenagers spend several hours a day on social media platforms. Explanation: This suggests that social media plays a major role in shaping how young people see themselves and others. Example: For example, unrealistic beauty standards online can create pressure and insecurity. Conclusion: Stricter rules can therefore help create a safer digital environment for young users.

What to notice

The paragraph works because each sentence does a different job, but all five sentences still move in the same direction.

Put it all together

Combine the five parts into one clear paragraph.

TS EV EXPL EX CS

One clear idea, developed step by step.

The key idea

A strong paragraph does not jump between ideas. It develops one clear point in a logical sequence from beginning to end.

Before you start the practice tasks

Make sure you can recognise the internal order of a strong paragraph.

What you should now be able to see

  • which sentence introduces the main point
  • which sentence supports it with evidence
  • which sentence explains what the evidence means
  • which sentence makes the idea more concrete
  • which sentence brings the paragraph to a close

Start with Task 1

In the first practice task, you do not write a paragraph yet. Instead, you rebuild one by putting its sentences into the right order.

This helps you focus on the internal logic of a paragraph before producing more of your own writing.
