Blog Entry · Step 2

Tone

Learn how to sound engaging and personal — without losing clarity or control.

Tone

A good blog entry sounds personal, engaging and still controlled

The tone of a blog entry is usually more direct and lively than in more formal formats. It should feel as if a real person is guiding the reader through an idea.

At the same time, a blog entry is not a casual chat. Your writing still needs clarity, purpose and enough structure to make your perspective easy to follow.

In other words, strong blog tone feels natural — but never careless.

What this means

You can sound more personal than in a letter to the editor or an online article — but your voice should still feel thoughtful and controlled.

The challenge is not to sound formal, but to sound natural in a way that still keeps the reader’s trust.

What good blog tone looks like

Strong blog tone feels close to the reader — but still clear enough to carry a real idea.

Engaging

A blog entry should draw the reader in. This often means starting with a question, an observation or a relatable idea.

Example Have you ever wondered why people spend hours scrolling through social media — even when they know it’s a waste of time?

Personal but controlled

You can use a personal voice, but your ideas should still be clearly developed and relevant to the topic.

Example I used to think this wasn’t a problem at all. But over time, I realised how much it affects my daily routine.

Clear and accessible

Your writing should be easy to follow. Avoid overly complex sentences or unnecessary formal language.

Example Instead of saying: “This phenomenon can be observed in contemporary society…”
Say: “We can see this everywhere today.”

Thoughtful

A blog entry should show reflection. It is not just about stating opinions, but about exploring ideas.

Example So maybe the real question is not whether social media is bad — but how we choose to use it.

Common mistakes

Blog tone works best when it stays between two extremes.

Too formal

Sounds like an essay or comment. The reader feels distant from the text.

Weak This essay will discuss the impact of social media on modern society.

Too casual

Sounds careless or unfocused. The text loses credibility.

Weak Social media is like super annoying lol and everyone is addicted.

The balance

A strong blog entry sounds natural and engaging — but still clear, thoughtful and controlled.

What comes next?

Once you understand how a blog entry should sound, the next step is learning how to organise your ideas clearly.

From tone to structure

In Step 3, you will look at how a blog entry moves from an engaging opening to a meaningful conclusion.
